“My journey with COPD began when I was in my late 50s, after a lifetime of asthma and an adulthood of smoking. By the time I was in my 70s, my breathing had progressively declined until I was dependent on supplemental oxygen to breathe, my worst nightmare realized. After some extensive research, my wife and I found Rob Hahn. His gentle hands-on techniques increased my rib movement and began to re-train my diaphragm for longer exhales and more efficient breathing. Through this work, after approximately six sessions, and committing to my homework of daily breathing practice, I found that I no longer needed my supplemental oxygen to walk through my life, climb stairs, travel without fear because I breathe so much better. I am now turning 79 and, thankfully, my quality of the life continues to improve, I believe largely due to the time I’ve spent working with Rob Hahn.”

In each of these videos, George is practicing his voiced counting. During these looped counts to ten, he is creating a small resistance to the diaphragm in its upward excursion of the exhale. This gentle resistance offers tonicity training to the diaphragm that, over time, with careful attendance to rib movement, tension and steadiness of airflow, yields a longer exhale and better ventilation of the human body. When George began this work, he relied on constant supplemental oxygen, and even a single count to 10 was a challenge. Now, he can easily make it to 10 sets of ten, and beyond!
There are 4 major underlying goals attended to in this work:
Goal 1: Achieve a tall, mobile spine.
Goal 2: Amplify and harmonize the movement of the diaphragm to restore optimal function of breath and voice.
Goal 3: Achieve a longer exhale, so one never has to push.
Goal 4: Get all the ribs moving at the same time and throughout the exhale.
In short, it’s a way of restoring optimal function to the breathing and vocal mechanisms. It does so via amplifying and harmonizing the movements of the diaphragm with the surrounding structures. The technique also helps to restore, develop and maintain optimal efficiency of alignment and breathing for peak performance in all activities in human life, from common to high intensity. This very precise work gives us more stamina, richness and suppleness in the voice. Breathing Coordination has been indispensable to countless musicians, actors, lecturers and singers.
This work yields greater vocal dimension, along with dynamic stability for screaming, belting, hitting high notes, maintaining an emotional connection, and increasing vocal stamina. This work has also been employed to assist Olympic and professional-level athletes and people with vocal pathologies (from asthma to nodules to even COPD and emphysema). I am 1 of 3 people in the US with a Level 2 certification, and 1 of 22 people worldwide.
“MDH Breathing Coordination for me has been a game changer. In my own vocal performance. In my athletic performance. In my teaching. In my role of service to others. In my moment-to-moment living. It is rooted entirely in clear concepts and in current understanding of functional anatomy and physics. It is transformational and has tremendous application to people from all walks of life.”- Rob Hahn
What is known as "support" is an optimal way for the body to pressurize the airflow and its variations through subtle adjustments of several groups of muscles, including intercostals, back muscles, all abdominals, diaphragm and more.
